Autism Awareness Hop and Giveaway
April is Autism Awareness Month
Autism is a developmental disorder that appears in the first 3 years of life, and affects the brain's normal development of social and communication skills.
Autism is a physical condition linked to abnormal biology and chemistry in the brain. The exact causes of these abnormalities remain unknown, but this is a very active area of research. There are probably a combination of factors that lead to autism .Autism affects boys 3 - 4 times more often than girls. Some doctors believe the increased incidence in autism is due to newer definitions of autism. The term "autism" now includes a wider spectrum of children.
I am participating in this hop for many reasons but the most important reason is the support for a good friend of mine and a fellow blogger has a son who was diagnosed with the disorder several years back.
I will be giving away an ARC of Abandon by: Meg Cabot

I just wanted to say thank you for spreading awareness about Autism, and for hosting this amazing giveaway! I'm a 4th year medical student who has worked with Autistic individuals, and it has been extremely rewarding for me. This condition has acquainted me with people, wonderful children and adults alike, who are faced with adversity, and yet live through it all with brave fronts. And that strength, and braveness is not only exhibited by the patients themselves, but by their family and loved ones as well. I wrote a post about it on my blog, I would greatly appreciated it, if you would give it a read! My post on Autism Awareness:

I'm a GCF follower and I think a lot of people think autistic people are just stupid or something. If they were to just talk to someone with autism for a few minutes though they'd realize that's not it at all. I worked with an autistic boy for my student teaching and he was amazing. He had such a unique view of the world.

Great way to teach people about autism - the more people know, the less scary it is.
ReplyDeleterickimc[at]aol[dot]com
I feel that people don't know enough about it. I myself don't know that much, and I really wish I had thought to learn more when I went to middle school with some kids who had Autism.
ReplyDeleteThanks for supporting such a wonderful cause!!

My childhood friend's brother is autistic. Back in the day, there was little known about autism so he was diagnosed as being mentally retarded.
ReplyDeleteMy first exposure to autism was through the movie, RAIN MAN. Also, one of my favorite TV shows, PARENTHOOD, has a character with Aspergers. Also, James Durbin, a finalist on American Idol, has Aspergers and Touretts Syndrome.
Thanks for participating in this hop for such a worthy cause.

I think Autism Awareness is very important. I work in a University Counseling Center and we have many autistic students. It's very important for people to learn about this disorder and how to interact with those afflicted by it.

Most of what little I know about autism comes from visiting with my parents' friends who have autistic children, and I greatly admire them for what they do for their kids.
